Ameet is not just a great player but a great person – approachable, constructive, direct, always helpful to players of any standard. Some GMs can be overly wrapped up in obscure theory, but Ameet has the knack of explaining complex strategies in language that weaker players can understand. He is the strongest player in the club, Kingston, which I captain and is also a key member of the very successful CSC/Kingston team in the Four Nations Chess League, where we finished second this year. We have a very youthful team and Ameet is always happy to give his younger colleagues the benefit of his experience. He is a great team man – very competitive but also very fair-minded – and the perfect guide through the tactical and positional chess maze.

Ameet was a member of the Checkmate Junior Club in Birmingham, where I coached in the 1990's. He was clearly hugely talented. He is humble, polite and gets along well with his peers. I was taken aback by how calm and confident he was, even then, unusual in someone so young. It's wonderful to see that he recently became a Grandmaster, at 37.
