About Mia
My B.S. in Integrated Science from Belmont University included two full years of general and organic chemistry, plus coursework in biochemistry and environmental science — giving me a solid, well-rounded science foundation. I have been tutoring chemistry for 5 years to students from middle school physical science all the way through AP Chemistry and college first-year general chemistry. I am particularly experienced working with students who have had bad experiences with chemistry before — students who feel like the subject just "does not make sense" no matter how hard they try. My approach of connecting every concept to a real-world story consistently helps these students break through their frustration and start making real progress. In 2022, I tutored a high school junior who had failed her first chemistry exam by a wide margin — by the end of the semester, she had brought her grade up to a B and told me it was the first science class she had ever felt proud of. In 2023, I helped three AP Chemistry students prepare for their exams — two scored a 4 and one scored a 3, with all three starting well below that level at the beginning of our work together. I love using visual diagrams, color-coded notes, real-life examples, and even cooking references during sessions — whatever makes the concept click for that particular student. Chemistry genuinely excites me, and I do everything I can to make that excitement contagious in every lesson.

Let me ask you something: did you know that every time you cook an egg, you are running a chemistry experiment? Or that the reason your muscles get sore after exercise is literally biochemistry happening inside you right now? Or that the fizz in your soda is electrochemistry you can taste? Chemistry is not just something in a textbook — it is happening all around you, all the time. And once you start seeing it that way, the subject completely transforms. That is the shift I try to create in every single chemistry lesson I teach. I want you to walk away from our sessions not just with better grades, but with a completely new way of seeing the world. Here is how I approach chemistry teaching: I always start with the big picture — what are we actually trying to understand here, and why does it matter? — before we zoom into the details. This way, every formula and every rule has a context and a reason, which makes it so much easier to remember and apply. For foundational chemistry, we cover atomic structure and the periodic table (I have a really fun way of making periodic trends stick!), chemical bonding, molecular geometry, balancing equations, stoichiometry, solution chemistry, reaction types, thermochemistry, equilibrium, acid-base chemistry, and kinetics. I follow AP Chemistry standards for high school students and align with typical college introductory chemistry curricula for first-year students. For organic chemistry — which I know can feel absolutely brutal the first time you encounter it — I teach mechanisms as stories, not memorization. Every reaction has a logical reason it happens, and once you understand the characters involved (nucleophiles, electrophiles, leaving groups), the whole thing starts to flow naturally. We cover all the major functional groups, nomenclature, reaction types (SN1, SN2, E1, E2, addition, elimination), and carbonyl chemistry. For electrochemistry, we go through galvanic cells, electrolysis, redox reactions, standard potentials, and the Nernst equation with lots of diagrams and worked examples. Biochemistry is where chemistry gets really personal — we talk about how your body actually works at a molecular level: enzymes and how they catalyze reactions, proteins and DNA, metabolic pathways like glycolysis and the Krebs cycle, and how your cells produce energy. And food chemistry is genuinely my favorite topic to teach because the examples are so immediate — why does browning happen when you toast bread (Maillard reaction!), how does fermentation turn grapes into wine, what does an emulsifier actually do, and why does cooking change the texture of meat at a molecular level. It makes chemistry feel delicious in the most literal way. Whether you need to survive your next test or just want to actually understand what you are learning, I am your person!
