About Shihyun (Emma)
Hi! My name is Emma, and I am an upcoming sophomore at Baylor University pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry on the pre-dental track with the goal of becoming a general dentist in the future. I have always been passionate about science and math, and I enjoy helping students build confidence in subjects that can sometimes feel challenging or overwhelming.
I have previous tutoring experience working with students across multiple age groups and academic levels. My experience includes helping middle school students prepare for competitive math programs and competitions, tutoring high school students in both AP and general chemistry, and working with elementary students in math through virtual tutoring sessions on Zoom. These experiences have helped me develop a patient, adaptable teaching style that focuses on breaking down difficult concepts into manageable steps.
As both a tutor and a current STEM student, I understand the importance of strong study habits, problem-solving skills, and building a solid academic foundation. I strive to create a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and learning at their own pace. My goal is not only to help students improve their grades, but also to help them gain confidence and become more independent learners over time.

I approach tutoring with the goal of helping students truly understand concepts rather than just memorize steps. My teaching style is patient, interactive, and adaptable to each student’s learning style and academic goals. Whether a student is preparing for an exam, struggling with homework, or trying to build a stronger foundation for future courses, I focus on making difficult material feel approachable and manageable.
For math courses such as Precalculus and Calculus, I emphasize conceptual understanding alongside problem-solving practice. I break complex topics into smaller, understandable steps and often use visual explanations to help students connect ideas together. In chemistry and other science courses, I focus on helping students understand underlying principles, relationships between concepts, and efficient problem-solving strategies instead of relying solely on memorization. I also incorporate practice questions, review techniques, and test-taking strategies to improve confidence and performance.
A typical lesson usually begins with identifying the student’s goals or areas of difficulty. From there, I review key concepts, work through examples together, and gradually guide the student toward solving problems independently. I encourage students to ask questions throughout the session and regularly check for understanding so we can adjust the pace if needed. Lessons often end with a quick summary of important ideas, additional practice recommendations, and strategies for studying effectively outside of tutoring sessions.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my ability to adapt explanations to different learning styles and create a supportive, low-pressure environment where students feel comfortable asking questions. I understand that subjects like calculus, chemistry, and science can feel overwhelming, so I focus on building both understanding and confidence. I also emphasize organization, study habits, and long-term learning skills so students can become more independent over time.
My lessons are designed for a wide range of students, including middle school, high school, AP/IB, dual-credit, and introductory college-level courses. I tutor subjects such as Precalculus, Calculus I/II, General Chemistry, Biology, and related science courses. Sessions can be tailored for students who need regular academic support, exam preparation, homework help, foundational review, or accelerated learning.
