• When did you develop an interest in your subject and in private tutoring?

  I developed an interest in Accounting when I started to work as a junior Accountant during my period of practical training at an Accounting firm. I always had an inclination to explain Accounting matters to fellow students and colleagues for as long as I can remember, so when the opportunity presented itself a few years ago, I decided to become a private tutor.

• Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  I tutor Accounting to High school and University students. The specific topics that I most enjoy teaching are year-end adjustments in order to compile financial statements, manufacturing accounting and cash budget preparation.

• Did you have any role models? Perhaps a teacher that inspired you?

  The Accounting Professor during my final year at the University of Pretoria, Prof. Marius Koen, was someone whom I admired. He was a consummate professional, extremely knowledgeable and always friendly.

• 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  A very most important quality a tutur needs is in-depth knowledge of the subject they are turtoring. In a close second place is good communication skills, without which the knowledge cannot be transferred to the student.

• Could you share an anecdote related to your subject or your student days?

  When I was a student, I vowed that I would not have any association with Accounting once I obtain my degree - how wrong I was! I ended up becoming a professional accountant (and loved it) and now I am an Accounting tutor hoping to help others fall in love with the subject. This taught me the value of persistence…. of never giving up.

• Did you face any difficulties at school or university?

  I was a high achiever at school level, and even though I passed all my first year university courses, I struggled to make the transition to university and started to fail some courses during my second year. I had difficulty understanding the basics of Accounting and as a result the tests and exams were nail-biting affairs.

• Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general, an element of this particular subject, or something completely different?

  During the 4 years that I lived in the USA I developed a passion for snowboarding. I also have a keen interest in the stock markets and follow it actively.
