About Mia
I have a Psychology in B.A. and years of experience and interest in learning and the brain. During my years as a student, I often worked with children, especially K-12 students who had IEPs (Individualized Education Plans).
After I graduated, I worked in two different neuroscience research labs at the University of Iowa studying nervous system pathology. I also explored courses in Electroneurodiagnostic Technology (primarily using EEGs to study brain wave activity).
Although I found these post-graduate jobs rewarding, I wished to have a calmer work environment with time to connect one-on-one with people. I missed working with clients in a learning environment. I decided to change course and gain experience with structured literacy training/employment through Apples of Gold Learning Center. After seeing the results of the intervention (especially with Wilson Reading System), I decided to gain further credentials as a Certified Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner (W.D.P.). I have instructed well over a dozen students with dyslexia over the past three years!

I have experience with utilizing standardized assessments to evaluate reading level and developing individualized instruction plans to address areas of difficulty.
During first few sessions, I establish a baseline for the student then systematically teach areas of highest need. My approach is based on Orton-Gillingham principles.
I can offer the Wilson Reading System (intensive intervention) structured literacy program. I recommend this for students diagnosed with dyslexia, but it can help any struggling reader.
Otherwise, I provide a flexible tutoring session plan with a mix of strategies to better meet the needs of each student. I am happy to offer support for general schoolwork and projects as well.
I feel strongly that an evidence-supported structured literacy foundation should be built on with the student's interests in mind. Keeping the student engaged is key! Although repetition is necessary to achieve reading accuracy and fluency, I strive to integrate activities and encourage creativity whenever possible.
I am most experienced with elementary-age children, and individuals with learning disabilities. However, my lessons are open to anyone who struggles with reading.
