About Sara
I hold a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Texas at El Paso (2025) and am a certified Texas science teacher with four years of classroom experience teaching high school science (including chemistry, biology, and environmental science). My research combines genetics, statistics, and computational biology, and has included mentoring students directly in data analysis and scientific reasoning.
I bring the same standards to tutoring that I hold myself to as a researcher and former classroom teacher: sessions are prepared in advance, tailored to where each student actually needs help, and focused on building understanding rather than just getting through material. I communicate clearly about progress and am direct about what's working and what needs more practice.

I teach biology, genetics and statistics using an approach built on four years as a certified science teacher in Texas and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. My method starts with diagnosing where a student's understanding breaks down to ensure they have strong foundational concepts, and I build lessons backwards from there rather than re-teach material the student has already mastered.
I strongly align with the pedagogy of The Fundamental Five, where I believe education should be student-centered, rather than teacher-centered. I firmly believe that a good teacher is what allows students to fall in love with subjects, no matter how difficult they may be.
A typical lesson would open with a quick "bell ringer" as a way to check on how much knowledge a student has regarding the topic to be covered that day. From there, we focus on explanations using concrete examples relating to every day life, as well as drawn from real research. Finally, the lesson plan ends with the student working on a problem independently while I observe and correct in real time, while using the Socratic method of teaching to guide students towards independent problem solving.
My experience as both a classroom teacher as well as a research scientist allows me to show real, active examples of concepts that will last in their minds for longer than just the class period.
Lessons are suited to middle school through college-level students in general biology, AP Biology, genetics, and introductory Statistics, including students preparing for exams or catching up after a gap in understanding.
