About Iris
Science is my greatest passion! I am a recent graduate of the Michigan State University College of Education program with B.A. in Education and a standard teaching certificate for teaching K-8, with an additional Integrative Science endorsement for teaching K-8 science topics.
I have worked as a full time student teacher at North Aurelius Elementary School in a 4th grade classroom in Mason, MI for the 2017-2018 school year. Prior to that I had worked as a student teacher in Lansing Public Schools in a 2nd grade classroom, as well as a literacy tutor for the Capital Area Literacy Coalition in Lansing. I also have a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University in Physiology with some experience working in the health care field. I am currently studying to receive my A+ certification test to be able to tutor and teach computer technology.

My teaching method is very hands-on, I believe that application of knowledge, especially in Science topics is very important and crucial to learning. I strive to make my lessons interactive and interesting to the student and also challenging enough for a student to grow and expand on what they already know. I think learning can and should be fun!
I feel that in order to be successful in teaching, I have to get to know my student first. What they like, where their strengths lie, and what they would like to achieve by learning. I feel it's very important to have a great relationship with my students and I try to match my teaching style with their learning style and with their likes and interests in and out of school.
Because I am a scientist at heart I am always searching for the most up to date research and literature on how best to teach science and what methods work best for different learners.
Finally, I believe in always monitoring student progress. I will always look for ways to check for learning by both myself and my student to make sure we are making progress and reaching our goals.
