About Dana
I am enthusiastic, passionate about reading, writing and helping my students learn to find their voice and express themselves through their written work. I use humor and a fun and positive attitude to connect with my students and make lessons as fun and hands on as possible! I help my students set and meet personal goals in relation to essay drafting, editing and writing for middle school, high school and college students. I have experience working with grades K-5 as a Title 1 paraprofessional, so am familiar with reading science and teaching dyslexia friendly (best practice) exercises for younger students just learning to read. I have taught 4/5th grade in a classroom setting during my student teaching, giving me direct experience teaching and writing in a classroom setting. I have also served as a writing tutor with middle school age students.

The best part about my lessons is that I adapt them to meet each student's personal goals. During the first lesson we set concrete goals for their reading and writing that are customized to their grade level (I work with 3rd through College- for younger students, parents are encouraged to help draft goals). We then set a time frame for the accomplishment of the student's goals. My lessons cover a variety of sub-topics including but not limited to: building writing stamina, free-writes with prompts, essay-writing, essay organization and drafting, essay editing, book reports, literary analysis- understanding literary devices, creative writing, APA and MLA citations, research and college application essays. For younger students, 3rd-5th- I also focus on the brainstorming process, organizing ideas, and helping them articulate their voice as a writer.
If there is an assignment they are working on, I generally begin by walking the student through the requirements of the assignment, then we do some practice free writes with prompts, or looking at past similar assignments or writing samples to get an idea of where they are at. I will then customize lessons to that students specific weaknesses, in addition to their goals.
My lessons designed to be fun and engaging, and customizable to your needs!
