About Melissa
As a certified educator, former school principal, and interventionist, I have worked with hundreds of learners to tackle the science of reading and uncover deeper understanding of syllable types, spelling patterns, and reduce the "mystery" of the English language and why it works the way that it does. I currently work as an instructor in higher education supporting pre-service teachers learn to teach writing to elementary students.

My approach is based on the Orton-Gillingham method for reading instruction and intervention. The Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach is a highly structured, multisensory method for teaching literacy to individuals who struggle with reading, writing, and spelling, such as those with dyslexia. Developed in the 1930s, it uses explicit, sequential, and diagnostic instruction tailored to each student’s individual pace. My lessons are built for 30-60 minute sessions that focus on phonological awareness, visual/auditory/blending drills, orthographic mapping, encoding, dictation, and connected text reading. Lessons are geared towards students 5-11 years old.
