About Heather

I’m an elementary educator with 9 years of experience teaching in both public and private school settings, in the U.S. and abroad. I’m passionate about making every student feel seen, supported, and celebrated. My teaching practice is grounded in data-informed instruction, I regularly use assessments to monitor progress and tailor lessons to meet the needs of diverse learners. I believe in giving students meaningful opportunities to express themselves and take pride in their work. I hold a Washington State teaching license for kindergarten through 8th grade, along with an endorsement in middle school math. Whether teaching number sense or leading Q&A with a local government leader, I strive to foster curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning in every student I work with.

About the lesson

My lessons are geared to middle school and elementary school students for reading, writing, and math. I prioritize my students' valuable time by beginning each session with targeted diagnostic questions to identify their specific needs, which allows me to establish clear, relevant learning objectives that directly address their learning gaps. After explaining concepts, I engage students in hands-on practice, where I observe their application and provide real-time guidance. When students struggle—whether they verbalize confusion or simply pause for extended periods—I implement a responsive scaffolding approach, first offering guiding questions to promote independent thinking, then re-modeling concepts if necessary, followed by new practice opportunities to reinforce learning. This structured yet flexible methodology ensures that every minute of tutoring is purposeful, builds student confidence through appropriate challenges, and develops both immediate skills and long-term learning strategies.

Details

My standard spot for meeting is the Starbucks on Yelm and Henderson. If you would like to meet at another location, I charge a $5 travel fee per lesson to cover gas.

I can use your curriculum or provide my own for an additional $3 fee per lesson.
