About Andrew

I greatly enjoy helping people learn, and would like to help you as well. I am a licensed teacher and online tutor with years of teaching and tutoring experience. I have taught Science and Math for 7 years at various grade levels in Public Schools in Oregon and California. I also provide professional development to other teachers on topics such as NGSS, CER, Rubrics, Google Classroom etc. I have worked with a variety of needs and have scaffolding to support students, including but not limited to:

Students with learning disabilities
Students who are developing English fluency
Students with trauma
Students from many different backgrounds and socioeconomic status

I graduated from University of Oregon with a Masters in Education in 2015. Before that I was a tutor for a few years. I graduated in 2012 from UCSC with a Biology (B.S.) degree. I also tutored other students there as well as some high school students.

I believe my past will help me serve you best, and each new session will be a valuable experience for me. If I was given the opportunity, I would work with you to build the skills and habits it takes to succeed.

From my past experiences, I have learned the biggest thing that prevents learning is disliking a subject. I try to make my examples relate-able to my students' everyday life, showing them how they can use a concept in the real world. I also work on developing self-management skills, so that learning can be done efficiently and with confidence.

I can use my Wacom Pen/Tablet on our Interactive Whiteboard Program, or other online learning tools like Desmos or Google Slides. I have a Yeti Microphone and pop filter for clear audio. I can also record sessions for later review, and share any documents we work on. I also intend to create independent self guided lessons in Wyzant and Youtube.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,
Andrew McLaren

In our first lesson we will set some goals and let you pick the problems that you need help with the most. I have my students do the problems as much as they can and ask clarifying questions as we progress. We will mark mistakes/misconceptions and review those after the problem or at the end of the lesson. I like to also check in about pacing around halfway through, and for feedback at the end.

Our regular lessons may end up being a bit more free form, but I like to have example problems shared 24 hours ahead of time so I can preview and think about how to explain. If you can mark the questions you want to go over that is ideal!

I use a wacom tablet to draw on whiteboard program while I screen share. Most students work on paper next to their desk. Some have their own tablets they are writing on.

If you are unhappy with the first lesson, I will not charge you for it. I do need 24 hours ahead of the lesson for cancellations or you will be charged for the lesson. Exceptions an be made for factors outside of your control.
