About Jaime
Current 8th grade English and language arts teacher at a transformative racial justice middle school located in the heart of Nashville, TN. The demographic served in the school is a majority Black and brown students from all across the Nashville area. Jaime Ashby's classes utilize the power of lived experience and first-hand narrative to apprehend larger complexes related to power dynamics, social hierarchies, race, gender, and other socio-political issues. Through these complexes, their students can ascertain above grade level content and skills which include but are not limited to identifying rhetorical strategies, annotating informational and nonfiction text, understanding the nuances of satire, writing a formal research paper, synthesizing central idea jots from the author's argument, formulating speeches of debate, etc.
Ashby's educational and professional background have emphasized and constructed his teaching methodologies. Being a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte for their bachelors of arts in International Studies with a concentration in development and sustainability, a masters of arts in Latin American Studies, and a graduate licensure in interpretation and translation. In their academic career they have been a published author from works varying from queer Black healthcare in Cuba, Afro-mixed race sex-work and economics, and a movie analysis about ancient Mexica lesbian resistance. Having a lived experience as an Afro-Latine American whomst studies across all of the Pan-Black Caribbean Transatlantic, they have been able to form new methodologies to study and potentially unite, develop and sustain demographics disenfranchised by the exploitation of their bodies.

My methodologies include the utilization of popular cultural productions such as cartoons, music, movies, "Banned Books," plays and performance arts to teach holistic lessons about social sciences, language arts in English and bring in a Latin American perspective.
A typical lesson will include an exploration of the students' reality and their lived experiences to connect language arts to their real world. I enjoy utilizing cultural references and breaking them down to certain symbols and expand upon them. I enjoy using books to aid in vocabulary acquisition, speech preparation, writing development, and especially cultural relativity.
I have taught college preparation classes in university, as well 8th grade middle school language arts under the TN standards of ELA curriculum.

Jaime goes above and beyond for everyone, especially his students. Jaime wants them to explore the knowledge of the language and literature in a fun, creative way. Jaime encourages topics of debate and controversy to discuss with others. Jaime’s heart and passion for literature, language, and people make them the best of the best.
From the time that I met Jaime, it became clear that he is such a beacon of knowledge and intelligence. Whether teaching in a classroom or giving a quick tidbit regarding historical ideologies, Jaime is an excellent example of knowledge, power, and educational liberation. He is very approachable and finds the perfect balance between relaxed and energetic to keep his “students” engaged. Jaime, you are so great! I fully recommend!!
Jamie is able to build a genuine connection through his teaching because he is a genuine human being. He accepts all backgrounds and welcomes any level of education that varies throughout students. It takes a lot for a student to finally open up and trust their instructor. But Jamie loves to make his students feel accomplished and believe in themselves
Jamie is one of the most eloquent tutors my child has ever had. Very patient and super knowledgeable. Most importantly Jamie gave my child confidence to read out loud in front of anyone!
