About Jeff

I am a Certified Advanced Tutor through CRLA with over 20 years of teaching experience as part of my Assistant Professorships at UC - San Diego and Tufts University, Boston. I began tutoring in 2019, at the strong suggestion of a trusted colleague and friend. I later discovered that his primary motivation for convincing me to start this new adventure was because I was starting to annoy him by always complaining of being bored. Ever since, I've been in love with my work. I enjoy watching students mature and progress and move on to careers, knowing I played a significant t role in that phase of their life.
My teaching philosophy is simple: ANYONE can learn ANYTHING if they have the tools, the determination and willingness to do so. Socioeconomic barriers should NEVER dissuade a student from receiving a quality education.

I teach students "how" to think, rather than just "what" to think. This, I believe, is the cornerstone of effective problem solving and innovation.
I strongly encourage all my students to be curious, ask questions and then challenge them with questions as well. Ask me anything and I'll know the answer about 75% of the time; the rest we find out together. I learn from my students as much as I hope they learn from me. Learning how to take whatever data or information is given and then thinking about HOW to use it to solve a problem or arrive at the answer is one of the key elements to being successful inside and outside the classroom as well as in life.

Outside of my tutoring commitments, I enjoy the solitude of a walk by the lake, reading a fascinating murder/horror mystery, watching vintage films, hanging out with good friends having "cell-phone-free" conversation and spending time with my ever so energetic cat, Taki. Hopefully if you are reading this you are interested in one or more of the topics I tutor. I can only guarantee that you and I working together as a team will get you over any subject matter hurdles you might have. Passing, failing, getting the A or satisfying a requirement is ultimately your responsibility. I am only here to guide you with ways I know work for you to succeed.

About the lesson

After receiving my Bachelors of Science degree in Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and my M.D. from the Medical College of Wisconsin, I went on to do my post-graduate training in Psychiatry in the U.S. Air Force serving military personnel and their families at Wilford Hall Medical Center in Texas. I then went on to complete a fellowship in HIV/AIDS psychiatry in New York City. While working in various clinical and educational settings around the country, I have had many opportunities to observe, understand and embrace people from various cultural backgrounds. My teaching philosophy is simple: ANYONE can learn ANYTHING if they have the tools, the determination and willingness to do so. Socioeconomic barriers should NEVER dissuade a student from receiving a quality education. Because every person is unique, I tailor my tutoring based on the individual needs and goals of my students. I never set up a formal lesson plan. Every student works at their own pace and setting a plan often leads to frustration and disappointment when expectations aren't met.

Asking Google or Alexa for an answer is not permitted with my students UNLESS the student has a solid grasp of the subject matter at hand. One of my favorite teaching techniques is explaining a complicated topic using everyday life examples or anecdotes from my experiences. The courses I tutor are often quite difficult and, unfortunately, are the ones that, without some guidance and extra work, often hold students back. I take the fear out of going through these courses by simplifying the details, avoiding some common pitfalls, answering quesions, and conveying my own experiences of what I know works and what doesn't.

I am very laid back, but very knowledgeable about the subjects I have chosen, While I can't ever guarantee a perfect "Harvard" outcome, I can guarantee that I will give you an individualized experience, tools, study and test taking skills that will then pretty much gurantee a grade acceptable to your program. I am patient, very detail oriented, determined but fun.

Because of the nature of the courses.I tutor, I only accept students starting their junior year of college and above. This includes adult learners.

My expertise is in clinical mental health. But, because of my various jobs, particularly those involving consultation work with various medical specialties, I have kept up on the medical side of Psychiatry.

My rates are very reasonable compared to other tutors with a similar education and training. However it is my experiences from travel and interaction with other culture that I learned humiility. Life can be challenging enough....so why not make learinng easier and enjoyable. Hire me and as a team (with someone who is "seasoned" in your conrner), we will succeed.

Solving problems as a team ALWAYS works. My tutoring schedule is very flexible and my basic tenet is that YOU are the only one responsible for the course outcome. I am here to guide, advise, correct, suggest and sometimes, just listen. My education may be more than many ,but that's the best reason to share and pay it forward..
