About Jon

Seventeen years ago, I knew only 300 kanji.
Two years later I had passed JLPT N1, scoring second highest in the state.

This achievement was even more remarkable due to a physical disability that makes writing almost impossible.

I have now been living in Japan for 16 years, where I:
- Worked as a translator and interpreter for one of the largest prefectural governments in Japan
- Produce translations for major corporations including Nissan, Toyota, Docomo, and Panasonic
- Served as a director for the Japan Association of Translators
- Spent 10 years working for Apple as a technician in a Japanese speaking role

Most recently, I am training to become a Buddhist monk in one of the oldest traditions in Japan, requiring knowledge of Classical Japanese, while I complete an Honors in psychology.

I have two core interests:

- What motivates people
- Efficient learning methods

My focus when coaching and tutoring is ensuring students feel understood and listened to, helping them remain motivated and happy as they work towards their goals.

Learning Japanese as a second language has completely changed my life and provided me with opportunities and experiences that I could never have imagined.

I'm now taking my knowledge of Japanese language, efficient study techniques, and psychology, to help others find their own learning path and achieve their goals.

... The description above sounds impressive, but don't let me fool you! I am not a diligent or motivated learner. I am incredibly lazy. To get around my lack of motivation, I have discovered learning methods that reduce my pain while increasing my gain.

Language learning is a marathon. It is not about who is more fluent or has the highest grades now. It is about who is still in the game two, five, or ten years down the track.

At the same time, having long-term experience learning and using Japanese as a second language means I can provide insights and perspectives that Japanese native teachers simply can't.
