About Hugh
I am an honours maths degree holder from Hamilton College continuing my studies at the LSE as a candidate for an MSc in Operations Research & Analytics in the 2026-2027 cohort. I have been tutoring for over five years, most recently as a maths tutor at the Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning centre at Hamilton College where I specialised in Calculus II, Linear Algebra, Modern Algebra, and Real Analysis.
My main research focus has been in optimisation and machine learning (AI/ML). I have developed truck routing software for the Food Bank of Central New York and done graduate level research on the asymptotic convergence of machine learning training algorithms. I'm always excited to talk about optimisation!

These lessons are for anyone interested in mathematics! I can tutor anything taken in undergraduate and below, like algebra, calculus, probability, statistics, machine learning, optimisation, and analysis. I graduated from Hamilton College with an honours degree in mathematics and two years of tutoring experience at the Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning centre at the College.
Lessons will typically last an hour minimum. I focus on building problem-solving skills and comfort with wrestling with difficult problems. An important reason we study mathematics is to learn how to push through adversity and find creative solutions by zooming out to take in the bigger picture. These skills are applicable to many other areas of our lives, not just maths!
I am a huge believer that no maths problem is easy, and there is never one correct way to solve. Creativity and perseverance are qualities that I strive to model in my tutoring style. I often wrestle with seemingly simple problems, which is common for even the best mathematicians in the world. I aim to demonstrate that everyone struggles, and that allowing yourself to sit with a problem is an important skill. It takes time, hours, days, sometimes even years to see the answer to a problem. Together we can learn to give ourselves space while solving maths problems!
