About Uma

I am currently a History undergraduate at Cambridge University.
I did History, Politics and English Language at A Level as well as an EPQ.

My main strengths are extended pieces of writings and developing cohesive trains of thought. My tuition goals are to help students reach their full potentials academically by setting themselves up with the best chances.

Each of my lessons are tailored to the individual student, focusing on what they are struggling with and where improvements can be made. I prioritise helping students understand why a piece of writing or arguments works and making sure they reach the confidence to apply improvements independently.

*GCSE and A Level English Language tuition:
For GCSE and A Level English Language tuition, particularly coursework and NEA, I can help with planning, structure, argument, linguistic analysis, clarity of expression and refining drafts. Lessons can involve discussing ideas, working through extracts or examples together, and giving detailed feedback on students’ own writing. In terms of content, every exam board is different, so once the student has sent through their specification, I can tailor lesson content accordingly.

*Humanities personal statement support:
For humanities personal statements, I focus on developing students’ ability to successfully communicate their intellectual interests. Even with the newer UCAS structure, writing a personal statement can often feel overwhelming, particularly when trying to integrate extracurricular and supercurricula in a natural way. I offer help with structuring a cohesive and well-rounded train of thought that captures individual interests and academic curiosity. After talking through subject interests I aim to deepen their knowledge by pointing them towards specific readings, ideas and accessible supercurriculums that can strengthen their application as the writing develops. I prioritise making sure the final personal statements are cohesive and thoughtful.

*Oxbridge History interview and admissions test preparation:
I also offer help for students aiming to study at Oxbridge, specifically History. I am currently an undergraduate studying History at the University of Cambridge, so I can offer recent, first-hand insight into the Oxbridge application and interview process. Interviews are where students need to be able to defend and discuss their personal statement as well as be able to approach unexpected texts and materials. I aim to recreate the conversational and intellectually challenging nature of an Oxbridge supervision rather than encouraging rehearsed answers.

*EPQ:
I take a similar approach to personal statements as I do with the EPQ. EPQs are an excellent way to develop academic interest, they can often be the integral part of personal statements depending on the students' interests. I help with planning, structuring and editing as well as shaping and expanding student's expertise through wider readings.

Lessons are taught online and would typically last 1 hour, although this can be adjusted depending on the student’s needs. I primarily work with GCSE and A Level students, as well as sixth-form students preparing humanities university applications and Oxbridge admissions.
