In all of my experience, I have aimed to be strictly student-centred in my classroom or online environment. I work daily to optimize student learning outcomes and ensure that student potential is fully reached. Mirroring my own experience as a student, traveller, and teacher, my classroom emphasizes a comparative, global perspective in instruction, considering the social and political variances at play in higher education in locations around the world. Also drawing on my most productive years as a student, my process as an educator is dynamic, free-flowing, and free from disciplinary restrictions. All lines of thoughtful and considered inquiry are valid and legitimate; questions, dialogue, and debate is thereby encouraged. This form of instruction closely follows the model of progressive schools of pedagogy applying the “Instructor as Facilitator” philosophy. I want my students to learn, and to learn fully and passionately with as much retention and connectivity as possible. I want my students to connect the dots between language, culture, history, and politics, in the Muslim World, in the Middle East, and beyond. I want my students to leave my classroom with tangible, meaningful, and long-lasting academic, cultural, and emotional connections in the minds and in their hearts for many years to come.
