About Manako

Hi! I’m Manako, a recent graduate of Imperial College London with a BSc in Medical Biosciences, and a Cambridge postgraduate student.

I moved to the UK in Year 8, so I understand how challenging it can be to adjust to the British education system, particularly as an English as a second language (ESL) student. I struggled during Years 8 and 9, but with the right support and encouragement, I gradually gained confidence and went on to achieve 10 GCSEs (7 Grade 9s) and A* and 4As at A-level. Having been through this myself, I really enjoy helping students build both their academic skills and confidence. I aim to create a friendly and supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and learning at their own pace.

Outside of my studies, I enjoy playing the clarinet in orchestras and bands, and I also play women’s rugby at university!

About the lesson

Teaching Style I would like to help students who need extra support in understanding STEM subjects and help ESLs. In our first session, I’ll ask what you want to improve or struggling on and find what suits you best as we process. My approach to tutoring focuses not just on getting the right answers, but on developing a deeper understanding of the content and learning how to approach problems. I aim to build students' confidence and find their way to study. I will give advice on study techniques that can also be applied across different subjects. Tutoring Experience I have experience tutoring students who struggle with maths and science, offering explanations and resources that suit their learning style. I also provide advice on UCAS applications and STEM-related careers. As a native Japanese speaker who attended Japanese Saturday school from age 12 to 18, I can also support Japanese students learning in English and explain the UK school system.
