About Charlie

I am a recent graduate of the University of Cambridge, specialising in Linguistics (psycholinguistics). I also have a strong background in English Literature, Language and History, familiar with the AQA A-level and GCSE English lit and lang syllabus. I am also happy to discuss university applications and entrance exams or interview preparation, having faced the daunting interview process myself with much success. I am currently building a larger teaching experience across all ages to complete Associate Teaching for secondary school in the new academic year. Friendly and approachable, I am very enthusiastic and also a passionate writer, having published a small collection of poetry at university. Alongside teaching experience, I enjoy writing my novel and playing several musical instruments.

About the lesson

My teaching method is individually tailored to each student. In teaching English literature, I typically begin with the text that a student is studying in school or college and work through the text. This is advantageous because I encourage the student to present their own ideas about the text, teaching them how to be original in thinking critically about a text, a vital skill for A-level examinations. By annotating and discussing the text in a one-to-one learning environment, I am able to cultivate a supportive and informal teaching style, allowing the student to develop their oral communication skills as well as written communication. I find this discussion is incredibly useful for students with additional educational needs such as dyslexia, as they are able to express their ideas orally rather than meeting the barrier of writing first. After developing confidence in their own ideas and analysis, students can then bring a confident, positive attitude back into the classroom to work on their written expression in school. For students that are seeking more support with coursework or essay-writing, I ask them to bring in a plan or draft of their writing, which we then read through together, identifying areas to work on style, presentation and ideation. Again, I often find that being able to discuss ideas and theses orally helps students to build the confidence to clearly express their ideas; this confidence is then translated into their written work.
