About James

Having been a top student in college and university, I started tutoring when I was a student of 14 years old, spending vacations teaching fellow students and those junior to me. I often came up with solutions more intuitive, clear and generally shorter than the standard answers and my fellow friends and students were always keen to learn about them. I really enjoyed explaining abstract ideas in vivid language, making many metaphors, and making interesting stories around the concept to make my students understand them intuitively. Through my tutoring experience of 3,000 hours, students become very interested in maths, physics and programming and naturally super excellent in them.

I obtained BA Hons (1st class), MEng (with Distinction) and MA in Information Engineering at Cambridge University. I studied at Gonville and Caius College and was the top engineering student there for four years, being Scholar and later Senior Scholar of the college. Achieving first class for all the papers over four years with many papers gaining more than 90% (75% is typically the 1st class boundary), I ranked 4th out of 330 engineering students at Cambridge and was awarded BP Scholar for academic excellence.

I published my first research paper on collaborative filtering, a technique used widely for online recommender systems at the age of 17 at MIT research camp RSI. I was later offered the fully funded opportunity to do a PhD at Control group within Cambridge but decided to pursue industrial opportunities.

I started at Goldman Sachs as an inflation trader and later moved to Citadel the hedge fund to manage Euro and USD fixed-income products. I then started my own company, specializing in pharmaceutical inspection with AI computer vision algorithms. With these career experiences, I sometimes augment the STEM questions with real-world examples as background to develop the application skills of students and broaden their horizon. It would be very good job-seeking training as well because many students need to start applying for spring programs of top finance and consultancy firms in their first year of university.

I teach at GCSE levels and above, including A levels, Step, Olympiad, and undergraduate courses for maths, physics, and computing. I also tutor software development, machine learning, computer vision, NLP, LLM etc at graduate and career level. I could provide career guidance and interview preparation training for university students and graduates.

The tutoring could be at my home near London Bridge, or at central locations (public or private). Online tutoring is usually carried out over Zoom, Discord or Skype.

With over 15 years of tutoring experience, I believe the success of the student and tutoring build on knowing the student's aptitudes and learning patterns, establishing confidence and trust, as well as developing an intuitive deep understanding of the subject.

I start by getting to know the student, the reason for their performance, and their desired target and timeframe. I then organize a revision plan for the coming weeks or days. I will decompose the subject and problems, put myself in the student's shoes to understand the specific concepts or techniques that students struggle with in maths, physics or computing, and help them develop a solid grasp of it. I ensure that I identify and develop the natural learning style of each of my students, enabling them to achieve their intellectual potential.

Furthermore, I make sure my pupils receive genuine encouragement and guidance which allows them to build the confidence to succeed. As a tutor, it is my role to provide students with emotional support and guidance, which in turn is seen through an improvement in their learning.

I would also help my students develop an innate natural understanding of the subjects, beyond the deduction and calculations for solving questions. Like that famous line in the movie Oppenheimer, it's best to hear the music of physics or maths behind the paper filled with lines of formula. With my tutoring, students can partly guess and see the results, and the calculations that follow are a verification of their initial guesses.
