I can be very flexible depending on what the student wants but in general I will start by asking the student what particular concepts they're struggling with or with a general test to identify any areas of weekness. Then I would explain the ideas behind it with examples and simple arguments to make it as easy as possible for them to understand.
Then I will give them a few review questions to see if they now have a solid understanding of the material.
