About Milana

Milana Sarukhanyan is a Bradford-based Ukrainian classical singer, improviser and a vocal coach. Her speciality is Bel Canto opera, classical and contemporary vocal repertoire and free improvisation. Her career highlights include appearances on BBC Radio 3, Royal Festival Hall, Susie Sainsbury Theatre, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Palau de la Música Catalana, Santander Festival Hall, Teatro del Giglio and Glazunov Concert Hall. Milana began singing as a young child in the Ukraine and after two years at the Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatoire in St. Petersburg, Russia, she relocated to London where she studied at the Royal Academy of Music and graduated with First-class Honours in 2018 and a Master of Arts Diploma in 2020. Her operatic repertoire includes roles such as: Najad from Ariadne auf Naxos, Lauretta from Gianni Schicchi, Elisabetta from Roberto Devereux, Emilie from Les Indes Galantes, Mll Silberklang from Der Schauspieldirektor and Micaëla from Carmen. Currently she is working on learning the role of Bertha from Barber of Seville and debuting it with Bradford Opera Festival in upcoming November. Despite her rich artistic background in opera and chamber vocal repertoire, she is a passionate advocate of free improvisation and experimental staging. In 2022, Milana curated a staged experimental improvisation ‘The Artist is Present 2.0: Musical Response’ which had been performed numerous time across Lithuania, Germany and the UK. As an improviser, Milana has appeared on stages such as: Café OTO (London), Nilsson (Düsseldorf), Witzli-Poetzli (Antwerp), and the Hundred Years Gallery (London). In 2022, she became a member of London Improvisers Orchestra, established by Butch Morris in the 1990s.

Throughout my years of study at conservatoire, where I received lessons with different teachers, participated in masterclasses, performed on international stages and worked with colleagues from around the world, I developed a teaching method based on the Italian Bel Canto school, Marchesi vocal exercises and Wim Hof breathing techniques. As an improviser, my advantage is a desire to experiment with singing and open new possibilities of sound making. The structure of my lesson 1. Breathing Exercises The aim is to teach my students to think more about breathing in detail. Most of our life, we aren’t thinking about the way we breathe but this is one of the most crucial elements in a singer’s life. The Wim Hof breathing technique helps to develop stamina and a deeper awareness of each set of muscles that work while breathing. 2. Vocal Exercises This section is concentrated on building a sufficient vocal technique. The set of exercises which I have been collecting from the Bel Canto School and Marchesi Method helps my students to improve every aspect of their vocal phonation e.g. correct modification of the vowels through the student’s vocal range, development of ‘head’ and ‘chest’ voice, the main principles of chiaroscuro and much more. 3. Working on Repertoire In my opinion, it is one of the most important parts of the lesson, as it involves working on something which my student is inspired by. My aim is to help find everyone’s individual interpretation and guide them to reach their best musical and vocal potential. Bonus: Listening to the great artists with my students! Apart from broadening one’s musical horizons, I love to share the music that I enjoy listening to and the artists I admire myself with others. It is best way to find some new gems in all sorts of musical genres. Education and Teaching Experience: I received a BMus and MA Degree at Royal Academy of Music together with a LRAM Teaching Diploma in 2020. I started teaching people of all ages and levels when I was doing the LRAM Diploma.
