About Olivia
Who is Ms. Morales?
Hello!
My name is Ms. Olivia Morales, and I am a dedicated private English tutor passionate about helping students excel in grammar, essay preparation, college applications, and resume development. With a strong educational and professional background in written communication, I strive to provide personalized guidance and support to students, helping them build strong foundations in English language skills while achieving their academic and professional goals.
I am especially passionate about helping high school juniors and seniors with their college search and application preparation. I'm from a small town in southern Louisiana, and I remember how daunting it was to prepare what felt like a million different essays and applications. Not getting accepted to an out-of-state institution was not an option for me, but at the time, I didn't have a lot of the resources and insider knowledge that students from private schools in bigger cities had.
I'm incredibly grateful for the support of my parents throughout those late high school years. Without their support and encouragement, I might not have achieved that dream of moving to a big city to attend a well-known university. After going through all the trials and errors, essay after essay, and test after test, I was eventually accepted to NYU, Northeastern, and BU! The moment I read my first acceptance letter is one I'll never forget, and I want to help other students get accepted to their dream schools too.

What is my teaching style, and what will the first session involve?
My teaching approach is student-centered, as I believe in understanding each student's unique learning style, goals, and challenges. I create a supportive and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, sharing their ideas, and taking risks in their learning journey. Building a solid rapport with my students is crucial for their growth and success.
Before the first session ever starts, I like to ask the parents what they would like their child to get out of our lessons, and if there are any things they would like me to be aware of in terms of their child's literary development. That way expectations are set from the very beginning.
During the first session, the first order of business will be to set the objective for our lessons. To do this, I ask that the student bring in the materials that they are using in their English class for the semester as well as any relevant homework or upcoming assignments. This will be the first step in determining what level they are writing at.
We'll then discuss the items they brought in, and I'll ask them what areas they think they need the most help in. This will help me determine how I will structure the sessions going forward.
Example objectives might look something like this:
1) Understand and apply grammar rules effectively in their writing.
2) Display a strong understanding of essay organization, structure, and coherence.
3) Familiarize themselves with the format and requirements of the ACT Standard Test and practice relevant skills.
Once we have a list of basic objectives, I like to give the students an assessment or short test to help me determine exactly where they are at in their essay writing and grammar development.
We'll then go over the assessment together and I'll make note of the areas that need work to help plan the lessons going forward.
Below is an example of a typical 1-hour lesson focused on ACT essay prep:
1) Warm-up Activity (10 minutes)
2) Grammar or Take-Home Assignment Review (15 minutes)
3) Essay Writing Skills (20 minutes)
4) ACT Standard Test Preparation (15 minutes)
5) Recap and Take-Home Assignment (5 minutes)
After our lesson call, I generally review what we went over, make notes of the student's progress, and plan the next week's lesson.
