About Monica
I graduated from medical school over 20 years ago and have worked in many different settings with different patient populations. I have taught medical students, NP students, and residents. I ran the Continuing Medical Education program at my hospital. I love drawing on my students' strengths and helping them realize all that they already know, as well as leading them through lessons to expand their understanding of psychiatry and patient care, especially patient assessment. I focus on recovery-oriented practice which leads with compassion while keeping a laser focus on evidence-based medicine.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist with nearly 20 years of experience across inpatient and outpatient settings, and I currently practice psychiatry with patients who have complex mental health conditions. I enjoy working with PA, NP, medical, nursing, and other health-professions students, whether psychiatry is your intended specialty or simply part of your training.
My tutoring focuses on skills that can be difficult to learn from a textbook: how to interview and build rapport with patients, identify the most important information, develop a differential diagnosis, formulate a case, and create a thoughtful treatment plan.
I particularly enjoy teaching the interpersonal side of patient care. We can practice establishing rapport, asking sensitive or difficult questions, interviewing patients who are guarded or challenging to engage, and getting the information you need while maintaining a natural interaction rather than simply working through a checklist. These skills are useful throughout medicine, not just psychiatry.
For psychiatry-focused learning, we can work through clinical vignettes, psychiatric interviews and mental status exams, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, psychopharmacology, case formulation, and preparation for coursework, exams, or clinical rotations. I also like to use videos and other case-based material so we can observe patient presentations and work through them together.
Because I am currently practicing, I bring real-world clinical experience into our sessions. My goal is not simply to help you memorize criteria or medications, but to help you learn how to think and interact clinically: what to ask, how to ask it, what matters, and how to put the pieces together.
