About Laine
With an MS in Biotechnology from Florida Institute of Technology (4.0 GPA) and a BS in Biology from Indiana University, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude, I bring a strong life sciences background paired with hands-on teaching and research experience.
In the classroom, I’ve done the real work, not just sat through it. As a Teaching Assistant for Foundations of Evolution and Ecology at Indiana University, I ran weekly discussion sections, kept regular office hours, and handled grading throughout an entire semester. That experience taught me how students actually learn, where they tend to get stuck, and how to keep a session moving without rushing anyone.
On the research side, my graduate work centers on biological data analysis, building and standardizing protocols, and producing clear scientific writing. That combination matters, because it means I’m comfortable with the details, but I’m also used to translating technical material into explanations that make sense on the first, or second, pass.
What you can expect is simple: a patient, organized approach, and sessions that stay targeted to your goals. Everything begins with the student. Before we even get into the lesson, I take a minute to learn what you’re focused on right now, what’s tripping you up, and how detailed you want things to be, because someone brushing up on genetics out of pure curiosity needs a different kind of session than a college student gearing up for an exam.
Once that’s clear, I shape the session around your exact questions and weak spots, not a generic, pre-set curriculum. We usually move in a practical arc, concept first, then use: I’ll lay out the core idea in plain language, run through a few examples, and then we’ll test it by solving problems together. The point isn’t for you to leave with “the right answer” from me, it’s for you to leave able to work it out on your own next time.
Where this gets especially valuable is depth. I know this subject from the inside, not just from a textbook summary. I hold an MS in Biotechnology and a BS in Biology, and I’ve taught university biology as a Teaching Assistant at Indiana University. That background lets me stay focused on biology and life sciences, so when you need to go deeper, we can, without skimming the surface.
