About Leonard
I have a Master's Degree in Medical Microbiology and 15 years of experience teaching Nursing and Allied Health Prerequisites at the college level. Courses I've taught include lectures and labs in General Biology I and II, Microbiology, Anatomy & Physiology I and II, Genetics, Biotechnology, and Molecular Biology Techniques. I've also taught scientific writing courses and provided editorial services, so I can help you with research papers and essays. Before I started teaching, I worked in basic science laboratories investigating viral diseases of the liver, and the genetics of cancer. I've also managed clinical research trials in pediatric cancer and ophthalmology.

When tutoring, I use Evidence Based Learning practices (VARK techniques, active learning, BOPPPS lesson plans, etc). To begin, I'll verbally assess your comprehension of the topic at hand, cover the general concepts (the Big Picture), and then guide you to mastery of the learning objectives through use and research of your educational resources (textbook, images, videos, lesson plans, and/or internet searches).
My interactive lessons allow the student to ask and answer questions, search for information, analyze images, and solve problems, with the goal of mastering the concepts and details required at their level of education. I also refresh student on fundamental knowledge that might be necessary to understand the current material (e.g. diffusion and osmosis, membrane transport, receptor-ligand binding, etc.)
In addition to teaching at the college level for over 15 years, I've developed academic programs, designed courses, lesson plans, and course materials, and also designed and led STEM Summer camps for middle schools and high schools throughout the Greater New Orleans area. I understand the challenges and pitfalls that students face when studying biology, and I know how to prepare students for success in high school, college, and beyond.
