About Timo

I am currently a PhD student studying the cell biology and immunology of cancer at the University of Southampton.

I previously completed an MSc by Research in Cell Biology, leading to the submission of a thesis titled "Characterising EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor-adapted non-small cell lung cancer cell lines" (copy available on request).

Prior to this, I completed my undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science, gaining work experience in non-coding cancer genomics along the way and submitting a dissertation in the field of ageing, titled "The transcription factor SKN-1B upregulates ins-7 expression in C. elegans ASI neurons" (copy available on request).

I have experience in different teaching environments, having tutored pupils in lower years whilst at school (progressing them from C/D grades to A grades) and then mentored students in lower years during the final year of my undergraduate degree (helping them progress from 2:2 grades to 2:1 grades). During my MSc, I trained a new PhD student joining our lab in advanced biological techniques. During my PhD I have also lead seminars and demonstrated for practical sessions, teaching a range of students including undergraduates, medical students and Master's students.

About the lesson

In the context of tutoring/mentoring, I like to let the student/mentee give an in-depth explanation of their troubles with a specific topic or module first so I can best understand their needs before planning a session.

I'll then make sure to read all around the specific area that the student/mentee is having trouble with before the session to ensure I have a thorough understanding and make sure I can answer any questions that might arise.

During the session, I try to reaffirm the student/mentee's base understanding, and then gradually build up the complexity of the topic, making sure that each new set of information is fully understood before moving onto the next.
