I am a biology graduate and a physiology grad student who has worked as a bioinformatics curator and instructor for 2 years and then as a personal trainer for 13 years. I have ample experience in teaching students both in person and online.

I know that student engagement is the key to learning retention and having great overall classroom experience. With changing times, education requires adaptation and evolution. Students are not as easily captivated as before and not all students learn the same way, but all can be encouraged to participate actively to build new knowledge. Crafting an environment that is holistic and effective is vital for student learning.
I use a variety of techniques to get students focused and better engaged in learning the subject at hand. These include using physical movement right before the lesson, telling a short story related to the topic, teaching with a sense of humor, mixing up my teaching style from teacher-centered to student-centered, and lastly, I always encourage self-directed learning providing the sense of empowerment in their education. I strive to make every single student feel special and work to reinforce the essential value of empathy in them.
