About Alex

I'm Alex, a Bioengineering student at UC San Diego on the Jacobs Scholarship — one of the most competitive merit awards the university offers, given to just nine students each year. I'm currently involved in computational biology research at Sanford Burnham Prebys, where my work on detecting extrachromosomal DNA from medical images is under review at Nature.

I've spent over ten years in competitive robotics, including captaining my team to a national first-place finish out of more than 7,000 teams and contributing to a patent-pending project at Johns Hopkins. I'm also building an education technology platform designed to make tutoring more effective for both tutors and students.

Beyond academics and projects, I'm genuinely passionate about teaching. I've seen firsthand how the right tutor at the right time can completely change a student's relationship with a subject. I take every session seriously, I communicate clearly with both students and parents, and I always come prepared. My goal isn't just to help you get through the next test — it's to help you build the kind of confidence and understanding that carries forward long after we stop working together.

About the lesson

Every student I work with gets a different experience, because no two people learn the same way. Before we even start solving problems, I figure out where the gaps are and how you best process information — whether that's visual, conversational, or learning by doing.

A typical session starts with a quick check-in on what's been covered in class and what's feeling shaky. From there, we work through concepts together — I don't just show you the steps and move on. I ask questions, let you reason through things out loud, and guide you toward the answer rather than handing it to you. Once the idea clicks, we reinforce it with practice problems that gradually increase in difficulty. I always leave time at the end to recap what we covered and set up what to focus on before our next session.

What sets me apart is that I'm not far removed from learning this material myself. I'm actively taking advanced math and science courses, so I remember exactly what's confusing and why. I also bring problem-solving instincts from over a decade of competitive robotics and ongoing research experience, which means I can teach students how to think through unfamiliar problems — not just familiar ones.

My lessons are best suited for middle school through early college students in math, from pre-algebra and competition math like AMC 8 all the way through AP Calculus AB/BC, Integrated Math 1–3, and Multivariable Calculus. I also work with students in introductory biology, physics, and programming. Whether you're trying to pass a class, boost your grade, or prep for an exam, I'll meet you where you are.
