About Carla

I recently graduated from Brown University, part of the American Ivy-League, with a degree in International and Public Affairs. Alongside my studies, I worked for 2 years as a peer language tutor within Brown's Center for Academic Support. I grew up between London and California, speaking Spanish at home with my family, and consider myself a versatile and lively person. Having also learned Italian, French and German, I have experienced and implemented various teaching methods and am interested in finding links between languages to facilitate learning.

About the lesson

In my Spanish teaching, I initially focus on perfecting the foundations of the language to help students gain comfort and familiarity to allow them to progress fluidly from a solid and correct baseline. I encourage active participation and dialogue but also work to tailor my lessons, explanations and tasks according to what the student responds to best. The priority is on building practical language skills that my students will be able to use and remember. I am a creative and enthusiastic tutor and I aim to work with a student’s individual learning styles, wishes, and weaknesses, so that students feel motivated to engage and learn.

Carla is an excellent teacher!!! My Spanish speaking and comprehension have both improved significantly since we’ve started working together a few months ago, which has been great for both my job at an immigration nonprofit as well as my conversational ability. She uses a number of teaching styles to make learning the language fun, and I quickly felt comfortable enough to take risks and not worry about making mistakes - which has really expedited my growth in the language. Plus she’s very kind, genuine, and enjoyable to talk to :) I’m really grateful for Carla’s instruction and am eager to keep learning with her!
