Instead of relying on dry lectures, I start our lessons with open-ended questions that challenge you to look at a theological text and a musical score side by side, discovering how belief systems directly shape musical structures. We combine close textual reading with active listening to track how harmonic tension, motifs, and historical themes reflect deep philosophical ideas. To make these concepts second nature, we end each session with hands-on practice—whether that means drafting a quick line of modal counterpoint or unpacking the architecture of a sacred piece.

Mark bridges academic rigor with genuine inspiration. Working alongside him as a fellow humanities tutor, I’ve seen firsthand how his background in theology and music theory shapes his thoughtful approach.
What I appreciate most is his Socratic method—he guides students to their own insights rather than just lecturing. When we co-designed a lesson linking Bach’s counterpoint to Reformation theology, his ability to make complex voice-leading and dense text feel intuitive and engaging was remarkable.
For anyone wanting to master challenging concepts while building real confidence, Mark is an exceptional mentor. I recommend him without reservation.View more recommendations
