About John
I’m a drum instructor with 5 years' of teaching experience and a Bachelor of Jazz Studies. My musical background includes performing with jazz ensembles, fusion groups, and session recordings. I bring a rhythmic and expressive approach to every lesson. Students learn how to play with musical feel, not just accuracy. My lessons emphasise timing, groove, improvisation, and dynamic control. I help students understand rhythm as a conversation between instruments. You’ll develop coordination through structured exercises and creative drills.
I tailor lessons to each individual’s strengths and goals. I believe in a patient, supportive learning environment. Students gain confidence through steady progress and reachable challenges. My drum lessons are designed to nurture creativity, improvisation, and musical expression while building strong technical skills. Each lesson is customised for the student’s skill level, whether a beginner exploring rhythms, an intermediate learner refining patterns, or an advanced drummer experimenting with improvisation. Lessons cover timing, stick control, hand independence, coordination, groove, dynamics, rhythm reading, and expressive phrasing. I incorporate exercises, song learning, play-alongs, and improvisation challenges to make lessons engaging, fun, and practical.
Students receive guidance on structured practice routines, milestone tracking, and goal-setting to ensure steady progress. My teaching environment is positive, encouraging, and supportive, allowing learners to experiment and develop their unique style. Lessons emphasise listening skills, musical analysis, and application in solo and ensemble settings. Students gradually develop technical mastery, coordination, rhythm awareness, and expressive ability.
