About Mnqobi
My name is Mnqobi Ngwenya, and I graduated with a BSc in Chemistry in 2024 from the University of the Western Cape. My journey in chemistry has been shaped by resilience, curiosity, and a deep passion for understanding how the world works at a molecular level.
I come from a township background, where access to resources was limited and the transition to university was not easy. One of my biggest challenges was the language barrier. Scientific English felt unfamiliar, and sometimes I struggled to express what I understood conceptually. However, I refused to let that define my academic path. I spent long hours reviewing lecture notes, forming study groups, attending consultations, and pushing myself to speak up even when I felt unsure.
Over time, I grew not only academically but also personally. I became confident in communicating complex chemical concepts clearly and effectively. That growth led me to give back.
In 2025, I worked as both a tutor and a laboratory demonstrator at the University of the Western Cape. As a first-year chemistry tutor, I supported students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds. Many of them faced the same challenges I once experienced — adjusting to university standards, overcoming language barriers, and building confidence in problem-solving. My teaching approach focuses on breaking down complex concepts into simple, relatable explanations. I emphasize understanding before memorization and create a safe environment where students feel comfortable asking questions.
As a laboratory demonstrator, I guided students through practical experiments, reinforced laboratory safety, and helped them connect theoretical concepts to hands-on application. Being in the lab strengthened my own understanding of analytical techniques, data interpretation, and scientific reporting. It also sharpened my leadership and communication skills.

English
My journey into chemistry did not begin in a perfect classroom or with fluent academic English. I grew up in a township where resources were limited, and when I first arrived at university, I struggled with the language barrier. Scientific terms felt like a new language, and sometimes I understood the concepts but could not confidently express them.
Instead of allowing that to define me, I worked through it. I attended consultations, formed study groups, asked questions even when I felt shy, and spent extra hours in the laboratory to connect theory with practice. Over time, I not only improved my communication skills but also gained confidence in explaining chemistry concepts clearly and simply. That growth led me to become a tutor for first-year chemistry students at my university.
My Teaching Approach:
- Breaking down complex concepts into simple, relatable explanations.
-Using everyday examples to explain abstract chemistry ideas.
-Encouraging students to ask “basic” questions without fear.
-Creating a safe learning environment where mistakes are part of growth.
Working with Diverse Students
At the University of the Western Cape, we have students from different cultural, educational, and linguistic backgrounds. Some come from well-resourced schools, while others, like me, come from under-resourced communities. My experience helps me bridge that gap.
I understand that intelligence is not defined by fluency in English. So I encourage students to first understand the concept in their own words before translating it into scientific language. This approach builds both confidence and competence.
Now, by taking my lessons online, I am expanding that support to matric learners and undergraduate chemistry students beyond my university.
