About Gan
My name is Gan Shao (Jack), and I am a classically trained pianist with over 15 years of performance experience. I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Music Composition for Film and Television at Kingston University London, and I will graduate in one month. I am also a music instructor teaching at a university in Anhui Province, China since this September 2025. Before moving into the world of composition and media scoring, I dedicated myself to classical piano, performing in China, the United States, and the United Kingdom. My teaching is shaped by this rich and diverse background. I offer lessons that are both technically rigorous and musically inspiring, with a strong focus on healthy playing, expressive interpretation, and long-term artistic development. I understand the challenges and milestones at every level of piano study, and I strive to guide each student with patience, clarity, and respect. Whether you’re preparing for graded exams, returning to piano after time away, or simply looking to deepen your connection with music, I’m always here to help you progress with confidence and purpose.

Why Take Piano Lessons With Me? A modern, expressive approach grounded in over 15 years of classical training. As a pianist with over 15 years of classical performance experience—and currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Music Composition for Film and Television at Kingston University London—I offer piano lessons that blend tradition, creativity, and personal growth. Whether you’re refining your technique, preparing for exams or auditions, or returning to piano after a break, my teaching is designed to help you become not just a better player, but a more confident, expressive musician. My Teaching Method & Techniques: Drawing from years of advanced piano study and international performance experience, I focus on: a) Sound-centered technique: tone control, relaxed posture, hand balance, and finger independence; b) Musical interpretation: shaping phrases, exploring harmony, and understanding stylistic context; c) Efficient practice: learning how to break down challenges, set goals, and track progress; d) Emotional connection: finding your personal voice through the music you play; e) Score literacy: reading fluently and thinking structurally—essential for long-term growth. Every lesson is personalized, responsive, and student-led. My role is to meet you where you are and help you go further. What a Typical Lesson Looks Like: Lessons are structured but flexible, depending on students' level and goals: • Warm-up & technical focus (10–15 min): Custom exercises based on current repertoire; • Repertoire (30–40 min): In-depth work on expression, phrasing, and musical narrative; • Sight-reading or musical discussion (10–15 min): Strengthen reading, listening, or understanding of form; • Wrap-up & weekly plan: We review your progress and set clear, motivating goals. What Sets Me Apart: • Experienced Performer: I’ve performed in China, the US, and the UK, and bring a global perspective to how music is interpreted and felt • Long-Term Classical Focus: With over 15 years of serious training, I understand the demands of advanced repertoire and exam preparation • Composer’s Insight: My graduate studies give me a deep understanding of musical structure and character, which I pass on to my students—beneficial for expressive playing and musical storytelling • Thoughtful, Student-Centered Teaching: I believe in nurturing each student’s strengths, pacing, and personality Who These Lessons Are For: • Intermediate to advanced classical pianists preparing for ABRSM exams, auditions, or performances; • University or pre-college music students who want deeper insight into technique and interpretation; • Adult learners or returners who want structured, inspiring guidance to progress confidently; • Aspiring musicians who seek expressive playing grounded in both technical clarity and musical depth.
