About Fiona

I am a member of the Ontario College of Teachers and I have a Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia. I love to teach English Language learners of all ages and abilities: from basic phonics lessons to discussing current events and practising English medical terminology. I enjoy it all. I am also definitely a word nerd and a grammar geek. My areas of interest include (but are not limited to) travel, exercise, current events, music, history, and culture. I love teaching online as I have the opportunity to meet new people from all over the world. It is a privilege to help people learn English so that they can reach their goals - personal or professional. Teaching English has become a passion of mine in recent years and I wish to share my enthusiasm and knowledge with all of my students.

About the lesson

In the first lesson, my aim is to understand the student's reasons and goals for learning English. I also assess their level - strengths and weaknesses. I then develop an individualised learning plan to help my students reach their goals. For younger students, a half-hour lesson is usually appropriate. For older students, anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes works very well. I have been a teacher for over 20 years, I have a Bachelor of Education with specialisations in Elementary Education as well as English as a second language. I have taught in large classrooms, one-on-one, and small groups. I am certified with the Ontario College of Teachers. I have created and curated a vast amount of learning resources to supplement my lessons. If a student wishes, I can send reading materials ahead of time, then we can discuss and I ask comprehension questions. I have phonics resources to help younger students. I also have reading materials for all levels and interests. I teach all age groups, from 4 years old to adults as I have experience teaching all age groups and I enjoy working with a variety of students.
