About Joseph
I am a Juilliard-trained artist, the first student in the school’s history to study both Dance and Music Composition (with Milton Babbitt). My career has taken me from performing leading roles on Broadway (West Side Story, A Chorus Line, Phantom of the Opera) to collaborating with American Ballet Theatre, to creating original musicals and choreography performed across the country. I bring this rare combination of performer, choreographer, composer, and educator to every lesson I teach. My teaching draws on more than two decades of professional experience and mentorship from some of the most influential figures in dance, theatre, and music, including Merce Cunningham, Bob Avian, Stephen Schwartz, and Arthur Laurents. My students have gone on to conservatories, professional companies, and Broadway stages. As a tutor, I believe training must be both rigorous and inspiring. Technique should empower artistry, not stifle it. I emphasize clarity, musicality, and storytelling in every class, whether I am coaching a beginner at the barre, preparing a teen for college auditions, or refining a professional dancer’s pointe variations. What sets me apart is the range of my career: I know what it takes to succeed in a conservatory, in a rehearsal studio, under Broadway lights, and in front of a camera. I also bring the perspective of a working choreographer and composer, so I can help dancers understand music, phrasing, and performance on a deeper level. Above all, I love helping students find confidence in their artistry. My lessons are designed to be supportive, challenging, and tailored to each student’s goals. Whether you are a young dancer taking your first steps, a pre-professional preparing for auditions, or a professional seeking polish and growth, I bring the same dedication, professionalism, and passion to your training.

My Approach to Ballet & Pointe Training
My teaching begins with the belief that ballet technique must serve artistry, not the other way around. Each lesson emphasizes clarity, musicality, and efficiency of movement. I draw on my training as the first student in Juilliard’s history to study both Dance and Music Composition, as well as my professional experience performing with world class dance companies and on Broadway. This unique background allows me to guide dancers not only through steps, but through phrasing, rhythm, and expression.
Teaching Method & Techniques:
I emphasize correct placement, alignment, and coordination from the very first exercise at the barre. Rather than drilling for rigidity, I guide students toward fluid transitions, use of breath, and dynamic range. I believe repetition should build understanding, not tension. My methods balance classical rigor with musical awareness so dancers develop both strength and artistry. Pointe work, for example, is always integrated with phrasing and weight placement, never isolated from musical or dramatic intention.
A Typical Lesson Plan:
Barre: Establish alignment, turnout, and musical phrasing in foundational exercises.
Center Work: Develop balance, coordination, and artistry through adagio, turns, and petit allegro.
Pointe / Variations (for advancing students): Focus on strength, musical phrasing, and stage readiness.
Coaching (as needed): Individual corrections, audition preparation, or guidance for professional repertoire.
What Sets Me Apart:
Few ballet teachers combine elite conservatory training, Broadway performance experience, and a composer’s musical ear. I teach dancers how to listen differently — to find rhythm, accent, and emotion in music that directly informs their movement. Guest artists from the Broadway and ballet worlds occasionally join for special sessions, offering students rare professional insight.
Who These Lessons Are For:
My ballet and pointe lessons are open to dancers of all ages and levels:
Beginners seeking strong, healthy foundations
Intermediate and advanced students preparing for auditions, competitions, or conservatory entry
Professionals refining artistry or working on specific repertoire
Adults returning to ballet who want a thoughtful, supportive approach
Above all, my goal is to help each dancer build a technique that supports expressive freedom, confidence, and joy in movement.

Joseph is an amazingly talented performer, theater artist, and teacher. Having appeared on Broadway, Joseph has the real world experience that students are hungry for, and he is wonderful at sharing it and using it to inspire the next generation of musical theater artists to achieve their dreams. Joseph is not only a performer with Julliard and Broadway credits under his belt, but he has worked behind the table as well. He is a composer, lyricist, and book writer, a director, a producer, and even a stunning visual artist. Joseph is truly a jack of all theatrical trades, and any student would be lucky too study with him and gain even a fraction of the knowledge and talent he posses.
One of the most talented and insightful minds I’ve met. Great communication skills and delivers information in a fun, interesting and thought provoking way. Works well one on one and in large class settings. Highly recommend.
I’ve been working on Broadway for over a decade, and whenever I need to dig into a song, prep an audition side (in person or on camera), or get through one of those pesky dance calls, I turn to Joseph. His eye for detail and his ability to integrate acting, singing, and movement always take my work to the next level. Since working with him, I’ve booked more jobs than ever before, and I walk into every audition feeling prepared, confident, and authentic.
I’ve staged A Chorus Line around the world — from the Hollywood Bowl to Málaga, Spain with Antonio Banderas to New York City Center — and I’ve seen what true professional rigor looks like. Joseph brings that same standard into his ballet classes. He’s not drilling steps; he’s shaping dancers who understand phrasing, breath, and artistry. What I admire most is how he teaches students to move with strength and freedom at the same time. Any dancer who studies with him is in excellent hands.
