About Paul
I'm a director and producer, making feature films, television, and commercials.
With over 25 years experience in the business I helmed the science-fiction series, “Horizon”, which went on to win a number of awards at international film festivals, as well as a Best Drama Director nomination at the Royal Television Society awards.
My feature film work includes producing and directing two gothic thrillers "Fear the Invisible Man" and "Frankenstein: Legacy", both released worldwide on Amazon Prime and Sky. My next film is a supernatural-western shooting 2027.
I have been teaching for over 20 years and when not filming, I guest lecture at various universities and colleges around the country. These courses include:
Writing and Directing - (Masters) University of Bristol
Cinematography - (BA Hons) Falmouth Film School
Advanced Fiction Production - (BA Hons) University of West London
Advanced Cinematography - BECTU, UK's media & entertainment union
Directing Actors masterclass – Birmingham University
I am also a qualified End-Point Assessor, assessing apprentices on Levels 6, 7 and 8 on standards such as Production, Production Management and Visual Effects.
I have written two film books released worldwide, “Shooting Better Movies: The Student Filmmakers' Guide”, and “Making Your First Blockbuster”, which is aimed at the more intermediate/professional film-maker. Both were released by leading film book publisher Michael Wiese Productions (Shot by Shot/Save the Cat).
The books were endorsed by film editor Eddie Hamilton ("Mission: Impossible" and "Top Gun: Maverick"), Director of Photography Dean Cundey ("Jurassic Park", "Back to the Future") and action director John Badham ("Bird on a Wire", "The Assassin").
Student Testimonials:
“Paul is a fantastic teacher, he taught me everything I know about film and some general life lessons too! He made complex filmic techniques and rules like 'the 180 degree rule' so much clearer and I truly believe my work with him has helped me into my current career working at the BBC.”
-Emily Miller
“Doing the course with Paul was fantastic and quite honestly was the platform I needed to help me get to where I am today. Before I did the course I knew very little about film making and didn’t really know where to start, but covering everything from composition to lighting, script
writing and editing it gave me so much film making knowledge. Although I always knew I wanted to go into editing and post-production, learning about all the other departments and roles was brilliant and has helped hugely as it gave me an insight into what each department does and what they require. I am now working as an edit assistant/assistant editor at the BBC and hopefully will one day be an editor.”
