About Fahad

I have always loved art and design and this was the main reason for me deciding to pick architecture as my career. I have a real passion for the subject and love travelling around the world looking at different architecture, cultures and history. I believe this has broadened my horizons in my field. I also do a lot of painting and sketching which has helped me when creating visuals for projects.

Initial lessons are always critical to our working relationship. I am very analytical and can efficiently identify where I can help elevate your work to achieve the highest possible outcomes. I usually take the first interaction as an opportunity to understand who you are, what your goals and aspirations are, collating that into a concise report that will give an indication to where you are and how I could possibly structure the following classes to make sure I can enhance your studies. Each student is different and will require different forms of responses whether it is reports, assignments or design challenges I am confident that I will be able to help. I have been involved in a number of design CRITS at the University of Manchester for BA and Masters degrees. Helping students realise their full potential and helping them achieve great successes at university and subsequently getting placements at top companies for their part 2 year out. As someone who interviews candidates at my place of work, I share my knowledge on what I would expect a successful candidate’s portfolio, cv and interview to look like. Giving them the best possible chance in securing their placement. I do also work with students in my practice and on superprof with the Part 3 examinations, case study and interview prep.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I had a real interest in art from a young age and a careers tutor at high school suggested I look at architecture. Which at 14 I had no idea what that was then I started to look into it and found out the similarities with the subject and being creative, artistic and expressing one's vision in real life. I found it inspiring taking a project out of nothing all the way to practical completion.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I love to talk about all aspects of architecture from inception design all the way to technical design. It's real satisfying watching a project coming out the ground and developing week on week. I like to discuss how one can illustrate their concept through sketches and verbalise it. Also how to lay out images and formatting. I've also had experience in students creating CVs and prepare for interviews.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I really enjoy the work of Mies, Frank Lloyd Wright and Zaha. However I have been inspired just the same by visiting magnificent works such as the Pompidou centre, never have I seen such an ambitious project that on paper just shouldn't work but is awe inspiring when you visit.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Listen! Understanding the student and the brief are the two most important. Making sure that students enjoy their work. Architecture is there to be celebrated and enjoyed.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I once had a tutor bin my model in front of the whole class. We were asked to create a toy for children that would inspire the design of a school. I spent 5 mins making it and she saw right through me. It taught me there are no short cuts in design and people will see through the fake ones.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Time! Time and managing time is always an issue and becomes even more of a challenge when you have a family. Having a balance of work life is important and it's important not to burn yourself out.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion?

Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different? I have a passion for Architecture whether that's working or teaching, I enjoy all aspects of it. I love traveling and seeing all the different architecture from country to country.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I'm passionate about my subject, I enjoy helping students get the most out of their projects and begin to see architecture the way I do. If I can spark the same passion in another student it would make me happy!
