About Portia

I'm a creative woman from rural Florida who's going to NC State to pursue my adoration for English, Education, and the arts! Outside of academics, I enjoy a life with lots of animals and family time! One of my cats, Mina, is my heart, and she's cute enough to motivate me every day. I pride myself on my positive relationships and my eccentricity! Whether taking trips to record stores with a delicious latte in hand or going for a drive in my car (that I love sooo much!), I just enjoy living life differently each day and strive for consistency through variety. I want to have a different drink in hand every time, or start my day off with a different genre of music, that's what makes me enjoy life! I hope to share my passions through teaching and writing, and I hope to motivate more people to try something new! :)

About the lesson

My journey in tutoring began with my sister when she was in middle school. She was struggling with her math homework and wasn't understanding through her teacher's methods, so I stepped in. I've learned along the way that teaching is never one consistent thing; it's all about adaptability! So when I tutor or teach, I sit down and ask what the main struggles are, the specific topics or steps, then I make it clear that my initial explanation is just how I learned, but I don't expect them to get it right away. Creating the reassurance of trying something different, without expecting perfection right away, has helped quell most initial anxieties. After the first method, if it doesn't work, I ask them to take me through the process as best they can, focusing on what they're specifically struggling with, then we go from there! I'm best at working with middle and high schoolers on English, Math, Art History, and beginner-level Music!
