About Antoinette
I believe that students should feel more like themselves after a teacher has taught them compared to before the lesson began. As a biology and chemistry teacher I have a teaching philosophy based on 7 principles that teaching should be: 1) respectful, 2) trustworthy, 3) based on a deep belief in students, 4) deep knowledge of self as an elder and community member, 5) mastery of epistemic practices and pedagogy, 6) learning routines that make sense to the students, and 7) a socially and professionally safe experience for all.

My teaching method includes the use of epistemic practices. Epistemic practices are processes based on disciplinary norms of the subject matter. I have used these practices at the high school and university level. In science these practices include how to study from text, proper vetting of science in social media, investigation, argumentation and engineering design. I taught in high need schools for over 14 years before going to the university to teach teachers. A typical lesson plan includes the following: a) a focus on the academic knowledge needed to meet mastery, b) cross cutting concepts and ways of thinking to cultivate, c) indicators of learning-written, discourse, social, visualization of critical thinking, d) resources, readings, demonstrations, models and videos, and e) assessments, language development and funds of knowledge. My high school students often out performed the state on state assessments because of this approach to teaching science and I'd like to share them with more students.
