About the lesson

My Excel teaching for science and technical students specifically addresses the powerful combination of Excel's statistical and data analysis capabilities with good data management practice, because students from scientific backgrounds often have strong analytical instincts but have never been shown how to implement them efficiently in a spreadsheet environment. I teach Excel's statistical functions — AVERAGE, STDEV, CORREL, LINEST, and the Analysis Toolpak — as tools for answering specific scientific questions rather than as features to be demonstrated, because scientific students engage far more readily when Excel functions are framed as solutions to familiar analytical problems. My approach to chart creation for data communication emphasises the selection of the most appropriate chart type for the specific relationship being shown and the specific audience being addressed, because most Excel charts produced without training violate basic data visualisation principles that significantly reduce their communicative effectiveness. I teach conditional formatting and data validation as fundamental data quality tools rather than optional formatting embellishments, because these features prevent the data entry errors that corrupt analyses and are valued by every employer who works with spreadsheet data. Combining Excel with basic statistical reasoning — understanding what a mean vs median choice implies, what a confidence interval represents, what correlation does and does not demonstrate — produces a significantly more analytically capable user than Excel skill alone. My teaching goal is an Excel user who both produces technically correct spreadsheets and genuinely understands what the numbers mean.
