About Matthew

I have over 8 years of experience teaching online, in public schools, and in training centers.
I'm an avid hiker, and mountain climber. I belief in positively challenging myself, and I ask you to do the same for yourself.

My methods include utilizing an active teaching style, encouraging as much student talk time as possible, and engaging my students in challenging inquiry that requires them to to use critical thinking skills and think for themselves.
A typical lesson plan for a middle school learner includes a warm-up, a brief intro about what we will cover for the day, reading an article or story, asking the student for their perspective on the reading material, and then asking critical thinking questions that get the student to delve deeper into the text.
Another typical lesson, for a high schooler, may include a student reading the essay they recently wrote, and then asking them questions to flesh out more details, and sharpen their arguments.
What sets me apart from other tutors is that I have a plethora of experience in multiple industries. I have traveled and lived abroad in China teaching ESL there to K - 8th grade in public schools and training centers. I have a print journalism and English literature background. After teaching in China from 2016 - 2020, I have continued teaching ESL online to children, college students, grad students and professionals from 2020 to the present.
