About Terry
I am Terry, a native Mandarin speaker and a University of Michigan Biomedical Engineering graduate. I was born in the United States and spent my early childhood here before completing six years of middle and high school education in China. This bicultural background helps me explain Mandarin and Chinese culture from both Chinese and American perspectives.
I am patient, organized, dependable, and committed to creating a welcoming environment where students feel comfortable practicing, asking questions, and learning from mistakes.

My lessons are personalized around each student’s age, current Mandarin level, interests, and learning goals. I use a practical, supportive approach that combines pinyin, tones, pronunciation, vocabulary, sentence patterns, listening, and everyday conversation.
A typical lesson begins with a short review, followed by a new language concept explained through examples, visuals, and cultural context. Students then practice through guided conversation, pronunciation exercises, role-playing, or age-appropriate games. I finish with feedback and a brief review of what to practice next.
I can teach both natural everyday Chinese and the cultural meaning behind the language. My lessons are suitable for children, teenagers, and adults at beginner or intermediate levels, including students preparing for travel, schoolwork, or real-life communication.
