About Gary
I'm a NYC-based award-winning musician and teacher. I am the founder of golden lotus studio: an online home for songwriters and am one half of the band High Fiction. I write original music for theatre, film, podcasts, and the concert stage, and I love coaching and producing other artists.
Recent projects include sound design and original music for the 10-episode podcast on the secret origin story of Title IX called Feminist Files, starring Jodie Foster, Samira Wiley, Amy Hill, and Leigh Fondakowski; and Bloody Mary Brunch, a single with High Fiction.
My credits include NPR, MTV, New York Stage and Film, The Kennedy Center, Ensemble Studio Theatre, the Magic Theatre, GALA Choruses, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, and projects with Meredith Monk, Bill Pullman, Leigh Fondakowski, Caitlyn FitzGerald, Barbara Dilley, and the Denver Broncos. I've performed on stages from Carnegie Hall to A.R.T./New York Theatres to Hollywood’s Hotel Cafe.
I've taught at Naropa University, Occidental College, University of Denver, Whitman College, and The Ohio State University, and I have had the honor of studying with teachers as diverse as Richard Toensing, Thomas Wells, Phil DeGreg, Hank Marr, Natalie Goldberg, and Steve Reich.
High Fiction’s debut album to: whom it may concern has been described as “a collection of songs that are simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking, confident and vulnerable, ornate and airy.” The album, co-produced with David Wilton (A Boy + His Kite) features Ron Miles on trumpet, Janet Feder on guitar, and Matt Berninger of the National on guest vocals.

I have worked in SO many areas of the music industry, but my real passion is for what a SONG can do.
My students and coaching clients can expect to have great fun working with me. I am passionate about not only the mechanics of making your best music, but also the logistics of the artist's journey. What makes us great artists and craftspeople is deeply related to what makes us vital humans.
In our sessions, we get right into the work--to be sure, songwriting involves craft. And as the work illuminates our personal challenges, we address those as well. For example, if a student or client doesn't do a particular assignment for the second week in a row, I don't chastise the student. Instead, we investigate questions of schedule, of commitment and of resistance. And if and when some emotional content is found (fear of failure, for example), we wrap that directly into the work to be transformed (write a song from the perspective of that fear, as if the fear itself had a voice).
This way an artist is never alone on the journey. And the path is always illuminated.
