About Sydney
Across sixteen years of tutoring I have taught 880 students, ranging from young beginners to advanced players preparing for professional auditions or serious personal projects. My own guitar training spans both classical and contemporary styles, and I spent several years performing professionally before shifting my full focus toward teaching. I am a demanding but genuinely invested tutor, believing real mastery requires patient, deliberate practice rather than rushed repetition of favorite passages. Many of my longest tutoring relationships have lasted several years, letting me guide a student's entire musical development from first chords through confident performance. Watching former students go on to perform publicly or pursue music seriously remains the most meaningful measure of success in my career.

After sixteen years teaching guitar, I rely on detailed diagnostic listening at the start of every new tutoring relationship, identifying exactly where a student's technique or theory understanding needs the most attention. Music theory is taught in close connection with repertoire, showing students directly how a scale, mode, or chord progression applies to the specific songs they are learning. I introduce structured practice routines broken into short focused segments, since consistent deliberate practice outperforms long unfocused sessions. For students preparing for performances or auditions, I schedule frequent mock performances under realistic conditions, since technical skill alone rarely guarantees confident live playing. I maintain detailed long term progress records for every student, allowing precise tracking of technical development across months of lessons.
