About Steven
Q - What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
A - We'll begin playing a song right away! We'll discuss your favorite artists and pick a song to use as a case study. Whatever your skill level and goals, we'll address physical technique, musical interpretation vs imitation, and relevant underlying music theory.
Q - What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
A - I have a rich history of playing solo and with bands. I toured nationally 2010-2011 as lead guitarist for a parachurch youth conference. I've worked with a handful of musicians out of Nashville, touring, writing and teaching. I've done countless hours of solo performance (singing and playing acoustic) locally and throughout the country. I have about 4 semesters worth of formal music education. And I've played with dozens of church bands over the years. I currently play for my church and with local gigging bands in Indiana.
Q - How did you get started doing this type of work?
A - I learned my first chords on an acoustic guitar from a camp counselor at age 13. I quickly fell in love and set out to master both acoustic and electric. I played guitars, bass and drums for a couple churches through my teen years, so I became very attuned to the "big picture" when it comes to making music. I started teaching formally around 2013, living in Nashville and becoming eager to work with budding musicians. I thrive on connecting with people over music and chasing excellence in this art form!
Q - What types of customers have you worked with?
A - SO many, from ages 5 to 70! Most are very much beginners; some haven't touched a guitar until their first lesson with me. Some are more advanced players, ready to dive into some deeper concepts and really hone something unique -- I hope to get there with all my students! I've also taught and tutored all ages in other academic areas -- English/writing, Hebrew, Greek, theology, etc -- so my teaching style and sense are fairly well-sharpened.
Q - Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
A - Right now I'm working with a teen who loves music and experiments with it a bit on social media, and wants to incorporate guitar into what he does. We've discussed chords a bit, and we just started exploring the major scale in the last couple weeks. He's learning how to work out a melody by ear, and see the importance of the major scale. His excitement for it has been especially encouraging to me over the last couple months.
Q - What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
A - Find someone who inspires you! Everyone is motivated by different things, I make it my goal to find what really trips your trigger and help you become a participant in what you love, rather than a mere observer. But find someone who gets you excited to get moving and keep at it.

Steven is a very talented and inspiring guitar teacher. I started taking my grandson to him a year ago when he was 5 and he has grown leaps and bounds with his playing. Steven has been great with him! I highly recommend Steven to anyone looking for a guitar teacher.
I’ve been learning guitar with Steve for about 7 months now, he’s an amazing teacher. He’s very versatile in all styles of guitar, and if it’s something he may not know very well, he can very quickly figure it out to teach it (I’ve watched him figure songs out it’s pretty cool) in the 7 months I’ve been with him, I went from not even knowing which string was which, to being very confident with barre chords (a major hurdle for some) pretty decently versed in music theory for someone who didn’t even know music was a theory, being able to confidently play a handful of songs, and being able to actually consider myself a guitar player. He’s always available for questions or advice outside of lessons, and he’s always been super super flexible with scheduling. I strongly recommend him as a teacher to anyone who’s trying out guitar, has been playing for a while, or just wants help figuring out a difficult song.
