About Daniel

Hi, I'm Dan! I'm currently completing my graduate studies at the University of Bridgeport, working toward my master's degree in elementary education. I graduated from Miami University with a degree in sport leadership and management in 2024. I have 2 years of experience working as a paraprofessional and substitute teacher, which has given me real, hands-on experience supporting students of all learning styles and needs. My coursework has focused heavily on instruction in math, reading, writing, and social studies, as well as child development and differentiated teaching strategies, so I bring both formal training and practical classroom experience to every session.

Beyond academics, I also offer basketball coaching and music appreciation lessons. I played competitively through high school and spent two years coaching middle schoolers, so I know how to break down skills, build confidence on the court, and keep practices engaging for that age group. On the music side, I've been making music for over 5 years — songwriting, singing, and working with music software — and love helping students explore their own creativity, whether that's writing their first song, developing their voice, or just building a deeper appreciation for music as a listener.

Every child has different academic strengths and areas for growth. In this personalized one-on-one tutoring class, learners receive targeted reading and math instruction based on their individual needs, grade level, and learning goals.

Sessions may focus on building foundational skills, reviewing classroom concepts, addressing unfinished learning, preparing for assessments, completing challenging assignments, or extending learning beyond grade-level expectations. Lessons are hands-on, interactive, and designed to help learners become more confident and independent — not just get through the material.

Families may choose reading, math, or a combination of both subjects. Because instruction is individualized, this class works well for learners who need intervention, ongoing academic support, enrichment, or extra practice.

About me: I'm currently completing my master's in elementary education at the University of Bridgeport, with 2 years of experience as a paraprofessional and building substitute in K-5 classrooms. I've spent real time supporting a wide range of learners, including students with ADHD and other exceptionalities, so I know how to adapt instruction to meet a child where they are.

How I get started: During our first session, I get to know the learner and informally assess their academic strengths and needs. Families are also welcome to share school assignments, assessment results, teacher feedback, or specific skills they'd like addressed. I use this to build targeted lessons and adjust as the learner progresses.

Reading instruction may include:
Letter recognition and letter-sound relationships, phonemic awareness, phonics and decoding, blending and segmenting sounds, high-frequency words, spelling and word study, reading fluency, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, identifying key details, retelling and summarizing, making inferences, understanding characters/setting/plot, responding to fiction and nonfiction texts, and written responses to reading.

Math instruction may include:
Number recognition and number sense, counting and comparing quantities, addition and subtraction, place value, fact fluency, multiplication and division, fractions, measurement and data, time and money, geometry, multi-step problem solving, word problems, mathematical reasoning, and explaining strategies using pictures, numbers, and words.

The specific skills taught depend on the learner's grade level, current performance, and academic goals.

What a session looks like:

A quick hook or review to spark interest and recall prior skills
Direct instruction paired with a visual or hands-on element (manipulatives, whiteboard, games)
Guided practice, where I'm actively checking in and letting the student work through productive struggle with support close by
Independent practice
A closing check for understanding — practice problems, or having the student explain the concept back in their own words

Learners are encouraged to explain their thinking, ask questions, and try multiple strategies. My teaching style is warm, patient, encouraging, and academically focused. I break challenging skills into manageable steps and give specific feedback so learners can experience real success while continuing to grow. I care as much about a student's confidence as their academic performance — my goal is for every learner to leave a session feeling capable.
