About Megan

I have a degree in English literature from Biola University. I love helping students learn and achieve their academic goals. My experience helping high schoolers with classwork at La Mirada High School, leading small groups of students through AVID curricula at Stauffer Middle School, giving my peers feedback on literary analysis essays at Biola University, and proctoring AP exams at Pacific Lutheran High School has prepared me to assist students of all ages and backgrounds. I have taken 12 units of college-level education classes and have over 70 hours of experience working with students with diverse learning needs. I excel in my subject area and am ready to help!

I would be comfortable tutoring students in English, Bible/Theology, and study skills.
Therefore, I could tutor kids in Language Arts, American Literature, British Literature, Reading, Writing, Composition, World Literature, Contemporary Literature, AP English, English 101, English 102, English Literature, Journalism, Rhetoric, Creative Writing, Poetry, and the like. I specialize in helping students write essays. I could also tutor students in Religion, Theology, Bible, New Testament, Old Testament, Spiritual Formation, and the like. If students are requesting someone who can teach them study skills or need general help with their approach to school, I can teach them how to take notes, create study guides, study for tests, collaborate, use a planner, etc. I am comfortable working with youth of all ages (from kindergarten to seniors in college) but would probably prefer to work with students in 5th grade and above.

I believe that providing students with structure and holding them to high standards motivates them to become the best versions of themselves. By creating individualized plans for students’ improvement, holding them accountable for completing their work in a timely manner, and encouraging them to try their best on every assignment, I will help them grow into the people that they were meant to be. When students seem discouraged, simply acknowledging the effort that they put into assignments and praising them for their strengths can help to motivate them. Caring for students holistically means treating them with respect, being aware of their emotional state, and providing them with the guidance that they need.

I believe that learning should be student-centered and my tutoring style reflects this. Whenever possible, I prompt students to answer their own questions (often by providing a hint of some sort). Giving students the opportunity to think aloud often leads them in the right direction, especially when they are working on a big project that seems overwhelming.

While working as a T.A. for an English professor at Biola, I learned the importance of breaking complex assignments down into smaller tasks. Discussing which steps the student will take to complete an assignment is often more helpful than finishing the first step because it gives the student an action plan and the confidence that he/she needs.

More often than not, students do not know what they do not know and it is my job to help them pinpoint the aspect of the assignment that is creating stress. However, I always ask students about their priorities in order to ensure that I provide them with the type of assistance that will be most helpful to them.

I also am attentive to students’ specific learning needs. While working as a teaching assistant in LA County, I created individualized learning plans for English Learners (of differing fluency levels), students with behavioral issues, and those with learning impairments such as dyslexia and ADHD. My education classes at Biola equipped me with strategies that I employ to make content more comprehensible and compelling to students with a variety of learning needs.

Teaching students how to study is just as important as helping them with their current assignments. I am an extremely strategic person who enjoys organizing, planning, and prioritizing. I would greatly enjoy teaching students how to use a planner, manage their time well, take notes, and study effectively.

I motivate students to learn by assuring them that the work that they are doing matters. I firmly believe that we can excel at anything if we work hard enough and I instill this belief in students by saying things like “you’ve got this” and praising their work. Students are often taught to view their education as a mere means to an end but this can be discouraging. When students justify neglecting to do an assignment because it is an insignificant percentage of their grade, I remind them that every assignment is important. I like to encourage students to work on their assignments by reminding them this is an opportunity to “do a favor” to their future selves. When students are at a loss for where to begin, I ask them “what’s the next right thing that you can do right now?” I firmly believe that we decide who we become in the little moments. Repeatedly choosing to do the next right thing pays off in the end.
