About Dr Dyi

If it were up to me, I would spend the rest of my life supporting academics and students with their qualitative research projects, writing and critical thinking - and doing my own research alongside. It is very rewarding and interesting, and I feel very passionate about all of this. When I'm not working, I like to read books, crochet, swim, walk in the woods, and sometimes go to a show, and play boardgames and have food with my friends.

I am an academic with over a decade of experience with teaching in universities and as a private academic coach and tutor. I like to offer private tuition 'on the side' (i.e. next to my research) as it gives me freedom and I can teach what I am good at and enjoy. I offer discount for packages (see below). COACHING/TUTORING BACKGROUND I have experience with supporting academics and students at PhD/DClin/ProfDoc, MA and BA levels, and across a very diverse range of disciplines - e.g. Sociology, Anthropology, International Development, Political Science, Criminology, (general, Counselling, Forensic and Fashion) Psychology, Counselling, Social Medicine, Public Health, Physiotherapy, Management, Social Work, Teacher Training (Primary School). In my private academic coaching and tutoring practice, I have specialised in offering support with everything related to qualitative methodology (e.g. thematic analysis, interpretative phenomenological analysis, reflexive grounded theory, qualitative surveys, semi-structured verbal and email interviews, action research, participatory research, ethnography and observation, collaborative research, qual. experimental research) - from research design and applying for ethics to the collection, coding/processing, and analysis of data, and the writing up of it all. In addition, I have specialised in supporting academics and students who are disabled and/or neurodivergent and from (otherwise) marginalised backgrounds who feel they do not receive sufficient support elsewhere. My practice is neuroaffirmative, crip-affirmative, and intersectional and reflexive in orientation. THIS IS THE SUPPORT I CAN OFFER I offer academic support in conversations over Zoom and/or reviewing documents where I provide detailed comments. I can also offer support (at a distance) with doing qualitative fieldwork (and coding and analysis), as well as ethics applications. 1) If we meet on Zoom for academic support, you can ask me questions, we can talk through ideas you have for a research (design) or your ethics application (including NHS ethics), we can address problems you're struggling with (e.g. with doing qualitative fieldwork, with writing), I can teach you about qualitative methods, about reflexivity and positionality, we can practise critical thinking, or do anything else that you require within the remit of my expertise. Generally we will meet online for one hour, but this can be more if desired. (If such a meeting requires me reading through a document, this will be charged separately.) 2) In the case of reviewing documents (theses chapters, dissertations, essays, ethics applications, research designs etc.), I will read through and comment on your document in the amount of time that we agree on beforehand. Through email, I will ask you what type of comments will be useful for you - i.e. whether you prefer margin comments or more general comments. Often it is useful - i.e. more efficient and effective - to meet beforehand and/or afterwards to talk this through (this does not have to be an hour). RESEARCH BACKGROUND Some students like to know a bit more about what I do in terms of research. I have completed various research projects where I engage with intersectional theory, social theory, pedagogy, and the critical analysis of inequalities and injustices in the realms of race, gender (identity), sexuality, disability and neurodivergence. I do both theoretical and empirical research. And I have taught in all these areas too. I am writing two books currently, I lead an international research team, I'm involved in another research project abroad too. While I am a Sociologist, my training is in both the Humanities and across the Social Sciences and my work is interdisciplinary. TERMS AND CONDITIONS FEE: My hourly fee for is £55. This rate is per hour work, whether this is for an online meeting or for reviewing documents. We discuss the number of hours/fee beforehand so you know what you can expect. Email communication where we arrange this is included in this fee. However, if email communication include support itself, this will be charged at this hourly rate too. CANCELLATION/COMMITMENT: Unless we agreed on a last minute job, jobs (meeting/document review) need to be booked and paid 24hs in advance. I charge 125% in time during the weekends and bank holidays. Once payment has been received for the agreed time and fee, I will secure a slot for you. DISCOUNT PACKAGES: If you book 5hs, this costs £250 (£25 discount). If you book 10hs, this is £475 (£75 discount). If this falls on weekend days and/or bank holidays, this will be 125% of the price. Discount packages cannot be cancelled. ETHICS: Note that I abide by regular academic ethics of working. (Please do not ask me to do anything unethical.)
