About Nierra

About the lesson

I am a recent Spelman College graduate from Camden, South Carolina. I obtained my Bachelors of Arts in Education Studies. I currently reside in Nashville, Tennessee, where I am enrolled in the Nashville Teacher Residency Program. I will obtain my middle and upper school teaching certification in May 2018.
My personal teaching philosophy most likely coincides with Vygotsky’s cognitive theory of development. I believe that with guided exploration, instruction, and a dedicated teacher children can learn anything. Some of Vygotsky’s ideas and beliefs include:

Thought & language become interdependent.
Complex mental processes begin as social activities & evolve into mental activities.
Children appropriate culture’s tools to meet their needs.
Children can perform more challenging tasks when assisted.
Challenging tasks promote cognitive growth.
Play allows children to stretch themselves cognitively

All of these ideas are key factors to consider in dealing with younger age groups of students, such as preschoolers and kindergarteners. At this age, the brain has not yet developed and processed how to think abstractly or from someone else’s shoes. Therefore, working with this age group of students requires much patience and thorough explanations. If a child messes up, the teacher need to be ready to explain in great detail why the child messed up and why it should not happen again so that they get a clear understanding about what they did wrong.

Constantly encouraging this age group of students to do well and put forth their best efforts will push them do great things. I think at this age these students want to explore and learn new things. Therefore, the intrinsic motivation will already be developing within the student. At this age, students do not need to be bribed with material things because they are already filled with so much curiosity. Reassuring these students that they are doing a fantastic job every now and then will help them develop intrinsic motivation they need to be successful later on in their higher levels of school career.
